Investing in the Future: The Gerber Foundation’s Commitment to Local 4-H Programs

As a proud part of the Newaygo County community, the Gerber Foundation has long been committed to supporting local youth through 4-H programs. Over the past decade, the Foundation has invested over $65,000 in 11 different Newaygo County 4-H initiatives, ensuring that young people can access hands-on learning, STEM education, leadership opportunities, and career exploration. Youth in 4-H build life skills in science, health, agriculture, and civic engagement – helping them grow confidence, independence, resilience, and compassion. This funding directly benefits local families, strengthening the county’s future workforce and community leaders.

In 2024, the Foundation continued this commitment by supporting five programs that provide meaningful learning experiences for local youth. The 4-H Fab Lab SPIN Club introduces participants to advanced technology like 3D printers, robotics, routing tables, and laser etching at the Muskegon Community College Lakeshore Fab Lab. The program also includes an educational visit to the Muskegon Museum of History and Science. Similarly, support for the Muskegon County 4-H STEM Education at the Lakeshore Fab Lab ensures that underserved youth have access to STEM learning, inspiring future careers in science and engineering.

Beyond STEM, the Foundation invests in outdoor education and leadership development. The 4-H Days at Legends Ranch program allows Newaygo and Lake County youth to explore environmental science, wildlife conservation, and outdoor recreation. This program fosters a deep connection to nature and leadership growth through activities like hiking, archery, and hands-on wildlife education. Recognizing the importance of higher education exposure, the Foundation also supports Transportation Assistance for 4-H Exploration Days, ensuring local youth can attend Michigan State University’s premier pre-college program. This experience gives participants a taste of college life, helping them navigate campus, attend workshops, and explore future career paths.

Additionally, funding for the Oceana County 4-H Hippology Team allowed local youth to compete in their first-ever state equine science competition. Participants demonstrated their knowledge in horse care, anatomy, and management, developing critical thinking and teamwork skills. The Senior Novice Team earned 1st Place Overall and 1st Place in the Team Presentation Phase.

As noted by Laurie Platte Breza, the 4-H Program Coordinator for Newaygo County, “Being able to partner with MSU, Legends Ranch, and Lakeshore Fab Lab opens doors for our youth to experience new things, develop skills, meet new people, and make memories all while having fun! There is nothing better than that!”

By investing in these programs, the Gerber Foundation is building a stronger, more skilled, and more engaged community. Through 4-H, local youth gain the skills and confidence to become the next generation of innovators, educators, and leaders, ensuring a brighter future for the entire region.
